The case against Brian Thompson
In the Court of Public Opinion, the people charge the late Brian Thompson with being an evil bastard. Here we address the evidence.
Luigi Mangione is alleged by the state to have killed Brian Thompson. The people allege that Brian Thompson was an evil bastard. Here is an abbreviated list of the evidence to substantiate the claims raised by the people.
A recent lawsuit against United Healthcare alleges a 90% error rate using an AI algorithm to issue claim denial:
“illegal deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) in place of real medical professionals to wrongfully deny elderly patients care owed to them under Medicare Advantage Plans by overriding their treating physicians’ determinations as to medically necessary care based on an AI model that Defendants know has a 90% error rate.”
This was later largely corroborated by a congressional report.
There seems to be little doubt that United Healthcare has the highest denial rate, according to VERIFY,
“Our analysis found that UnitedHealthcare did deny claims at a rate of around 33% – the highest rate of any major insurer. This closely mirrors what ValuePenguin found.”
In a separate class action suit, it is alleged that United Healthcare was being investigated by the DOJ and Thompson was named explicitly for having dumped 15 million dollars of stock. The suit alleges that this DOJ investigation which Thompson acted on was known since October of 2023.
“UnitedHealth was aware of the DOJ investigation since at least October 2023. Instead of disclosing this material investigation to investors or the public, UnitedHealth insiders sold more than $120 million of their personally held UnitedHealth shares. In the four months between learning about the DOJ investigation and the investigation becoming public, UnitedHealth’s Chairman Stephen Hemsley sold over $102 million of his personally held UnitedHealth shares and Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, sold over $15 million of his personally held UnitedHealth shares.”
Thompson was credited for a plan to start denying payment for “non-critical visits to the emergency room”. In an open letter to Thompson, the American Hospital Association wrote, “patients are not medical experts and should not be expected to self-diagnose during what they believe is a medical emergency.” They go on to make note that this would be illegal and a violation of the “prudent layperson standard.” And on intent, they make no bones about this
“this policy change is financially-motivated” […] “Despite implementing policies to restrict enrollee coverage over the past several years, UHC premiums continue to rise in most markets, as do UHC’s profits. As you know, UHC’s parent company UnitedHealth Group posted a 35% year-over-year jump in operating profits in the first quarter of 2021. Despite earning $6.7 billion in a single quarter, UHC enrollees are being asked to pay more for their coverage.”
Verdict
Having reviewed the evidence conclusively, I concur with the Court of Public Opinion and agree with the court’s finding. In the case against Brian Thompson, “evil bastard” is substantiated by the facts. Further, if he was alive today, I would be willing to swear on his head that this is a photo-realistic portrait of the defendant.
