Camp Mystic, cabins, and the 100 year flood plane
A review of some of the FEMA documents on Camp Mystic.
I wrote a previous article about mapping about Camp Mystic where I named the cabins. I submitted that article to Reddit. In response, someone sent me screen shots of a FEMA document with structures identified in the 100 year flood zone. I’ve seen independently verified it. The originals are posted here.
In this document you can see the location of Camp Mystic Guadalupe River location at 2689 Highway 39 along with 15 structures that are supposed to removed from the SFHA: Special Flood Hazard Area. The SFHA is colloquially called the “100-year floodplain.” This is the region which has at least a one-in-four chance of flooding during a 30-year mortgage.
These itemized structures at Camp Mystic Guadalupe River are are all in the 100 year flood zone. You can see these structures are flagged in the SFHA in 2019.
This comes from a document that I have verified is FEMA with Case 14-06-0124A. Below is the FEMA map of the camp. The blue here — the kids Cabins — they were all in or around the 2011 SFHA.
It’s interesting just how little you’d have to move those cabins to make them substantially less flood-prone. That blue band goes right through them.
Camp Mystic Crystal Lake
Camp Mystic Crystal Lake also has structures in the flood zone. These are in case 19-06-4012A. In fact, Crystal Lake opened in 2020 and also has all of its cabins in the 100 year flood zone.
You can see the Crystal Lake flood map here,
OMG. Look at how easy this catastrophic disaster could have been avoided.
